Scott Boardman, President

Scott joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in July of 1982, as a Property and Casualty Agent and was elected Vice President in 1989. In 1992, Scott was elected Executive Vice President and named Chief Operating Officer of Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group. In 1994, Scott was elected President.

Scott is a graduate of Holy Cross College where he received a B.A. in Economics in 1982. He is a member and past-President of the Vermont Chapter of CPCU, as well as a past-President of the Vermont Insurance Agents Association (VIAA). Scott currently serves as a director of Merchant’s Bank, Lake Mansfield Trout Club, A.N. Deringer, Inc., and PC Construction Company.

Michael Boardman, Senior Vice President

Mike joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 1991. As a Business Client Advisor, Mike is responsible for marketing and assisting clients in the management of their property and casualty insurance. In addition, Mike is Chief Operating Officer and a principal of the company.

Mike is a graduate of Holy Cross College, where he received a B.A. in Economics, and New York University, where he received his MBA in Finance in 1991. He earned the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1997.

Paul Plunkett, Senior Vice President

Paul joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 1988, as a Commercial Property and Casualty Agent, responsible for the development of large strategic clients. Paul became a principal of Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1994. In 1999, Paul was elected Senior Vice President. In addition to his producer responsibilities, Paul is the Corporate Director of Business Development for Hickok & Boardman and Denis, Ricker & Brown.

Paul is a graduate of St. Michael’s College where he received a B.S. in Business in 1986. He holds a Certified Insurance Counselor designation and is a member of the Vermont Chapter of Certified Insurance Counselors.

Carla Boardman Smalling, Vice President

Carla joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in July of 1992, as a Property/Casualty Agent, specializing in the personal lines area of insurance. She became a principal of the company in 1994 and was elected as Vice President in 1997. In 2006, she was elected to the Hickok & Boardman Board of Directors. In 2009, Carla was elected to serve on the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber Board.

Carla volunteers with CHAMP (Champlain Adaptive Mounted Program), a non-profit organization providing therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with a wide range of physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. She has resided in Essex Junction for the past twenty-nine years. She lives with her husband, Kent, and their two daughters.

Jay Nunn, Controller

Jay joined the Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group as Controller in October, 2018.  He brings over 15 years of Finance and Accounting experience in both Manufacturing and Financial Services, having previously worked for State Street Bank, Fidelity Investments, JP Morgan Chase and most recently, UTC Aerospace Systems.  Jay received his Bachelors from Wittenberg University and holds his MBA from Norwich University.

Jay grew up near Columbus, Ohio and currently resides in South Burlington with his wife Katie and two children Maryann and Cameron.  In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling and getting outdoors.

Kate Emert, Human Resources Manager

Kate joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in December of 2013 as a Human Resources Manager. Kate holds a Bachelors Degree from Plattsburgh State University. She comes to Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group with almost thirteen years of experience in Human Resources in both banking and manufacturing.

Kate and her husband, Jarett, reside in Waterbury.

Jeff LaBonte, Vice President
Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Jeff joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2007 as a Business Insurance Client Advisor. He is responsible for the development of medium to large size clients. In 2015 Jeff became a partner of Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, Jeff worked for Merchants Bank for seven years.

Jeff is a graduate of St. Michael’s College, where he received a B.S. in Business in 1998. He was named Alumnus of the Year in 2013 and recently joined the Alumni Board of Directors for the College. Jeff has been a Corporator for Northfield Savings Bank since 2016. He also serves as a Board Member for the Ferrara Group which is a local non-profit. Jeff enjoys playing golf and basketball in his spare time. He currently resides in Essex Junction with his wife Jen and their four children.

Matt Campbell, Vice President

Matt is a native of Vermont and joined the Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in August 2008 as a Business Client Advisor, responsible for the development and cultivation of large commercial clients. Prior to H&B, Matt spent 4 years in Boston working for a large Insurance carrier. Matt became a stockholder of Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2014.

Matt graduated from Fairfield University with a major in Business Management and minor in Accounting. Matt also sits on the board of Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation as well as the King Street Youth Center. Matt currently resides in South Burlington with his wife Katie, their two young children and their Bernese mountain dog, Steve!

Ian Sutherland, Vice President

Ian Sutherland joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in August 2009, as a Commercial Sales Executive. In 2014, Ian became a stockholder of Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group. Ian graduated from Saint Michael’s College with a B.A. in Psychology and Business. He holds the Certified Insurance Counselor and Accredited Advisor in Insurance designations.

Ian resides in South Burlington with his wife, Erin, and their four kids: Tommy, Susie, Tucker and Winnie. When the kids don’t have him building a pirate ship, hiking Mt. Philo, or sledding “weally fast!”, he enjoys volunteering for Special Olympics Vermont and the Arthritis Foundation.

Mindy Bero, Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Mindy Bero joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in September 2014, as a Client Advisor for Business Insurance. Mindy graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. in International Business. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, Mindy worked for a local news station as a Senior Account Executive for seven years.

She resides in Essex with her husband, Pete, and their two young children. Mindy enjoys spending time with her family and friends, skiing, and traveling.

Peter Child, Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Peter joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2017 as a Business Client Advisor. He is responsible for the development and cultivation of medium to large commercial clients. Prior to Hickok and Boardman, Peter spent 5 years working in medical sales, specializing in Orthopedics. Peter graduated from St. Lawrence University in 2012 with a Neuroscience degree. Peter is a native Vermonter. He currently resides in South Burlington with his wife and two kids along with their golden retriever, Walter.

Christine Morse, Personal Lines and Claims Manager

Christine joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2001 as a Claims Specialist, supporting our five office locations. Christine covers and responds to our 24/7, 365 days a year emergency claims pager. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman, Christine was a licensed agent at a local Vermont agency, where she serviced claims for both Personal and Commercial lines. She has 29 years of experience in the insurance industry as a licensed agent. Christine graduated from Essex Junction Technical Center in Essex Junction, Vermont in 1973 with a business background.

Christine also spends her time volunteering at local nursing homes. In her off time Christine enjoys traveling and taking cruises to the Bahamas. She currently resides in Essex Junction with her husband, Benjamin, and her Pomeranian, Lissabeth.

Jennifer Barrett joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in August 2009, as the Director of Workers’ Compensation Risk Management and became a stockholder in 2014. Jennifer has thirteen years of experience in the insurance industry and nine years specifically in the risk management field. She is a licensed Property & Casualty Insurance Agent, a licensed Workers’ Compensation Insurance Adjuster, and holds a CRIS (Construction Risk Insurance Specialist) designation. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, Jennifer worked in the Safety and Risk Management Department as the Corporate Insurance Manager at Pizzagalli Construction.

Jennifer is a native Vermonter, and resides in South Burlington, Vermont, with her husband, B.J., and two children, Brady and Tye. Jennifer is also an avid equestrian and enjoys spending time with her two horses.

Lindsey joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2013 as an integral part of Green Mountain Safety Consulting’s team. She is a licensed Property & Casualty Insurance Agent, a licensed Workers’ Compensation Insurance Adjuster, and holds a CRIS (Construction Risk Insurance Specialist) designation. Lindsay resides in Georgia, Vermont with her husband and baby, Maxwell. Lindsay is passionate about horseback riding and enjoys spending her free time practicing yoga and dance. Currently Lindsey is an active member of the CVAIP and serves as a co-chair on their safety committee.

Peter joined Denis, Ricker & Brown, a member of the Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, in October of 1993. He became a principal and was elected Vice President in April of 2000. Peter graduated from St. Lawrence University with a B.A. in Economics in 1992. He is a member of the Vermont Chapter of Certified Insurance Councilors (CIC).

Peter is a member of the Montpelier Rotary Club, Director for the Central VT Economic Development Corporation, and Director for Montpelier Alive. He lives in Montpelier with his wife and three children.

Brian joined Denis, Ricker & Brown, a member of the Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, in November of 1987, as a Property & Casualty Agent. In 1997, he became Vice President and owner of Denis, Ricker, & Brown, as well as elected to the Board of Directors. He is a graduate of the University of Vermont where he received a B.S. Degree in 1987. Brian has achieved the designations of Certified Insurance Counselor and Accredited Advisor of Insurance.

Brian is a member of the Montpelier Rotary Club and a past-President of the Central VT Chamber of Commerce. He has also served on many advisory committees for non-profit organizations in Central Vermont. Brian, his wife, and two children reside in the town of Berlin.

Denise Russo, Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Denise joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, in 2014, as a Business Insurance Client Advisor. Denise brings twelve years of experience in the agricultural industry with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture and seven years in business sales, most recently with UPS. Denise attended Cornell University and graduated with a B.S. in 1991.

Denise is currently the Chair of Parish Finance Council for St. Andrew’s Parish in Waterbury Vermont, and has been a Sunday school instructor for six years. She also volunteers with the Mad River Valley Youth Lacrosse league. In her off time, Denise enjoys hiking, camping, and gardening. She currently resides in Moretown, VT with her husband, and three children.

Debra Russell, Client Adviser, Personal Insurance

Debra Russell joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2007 as an account manager in Personal Lines and was promoted to Client Advisor in 2014. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, Debra enjoyed a prosperous career in the food and beverage industry serving as both Manager and Director in the sector.

Deb currently resides in Waterbury with her family, and enjoys the Vermont landscape while riding her motorcycle, bicyling, traveling and working out.

Kris Green, Claims Specialist

Kris joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2016, as a Claims Specialist. Kris has 6 years of experience in property and casualty insurance claims and holds the Associate in Claims (AIC) designation. Kris graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Campbellsville University in 2006.
Kris is currently a youth leader for Christ Community Alliance Church in Orange, Vermont. In his free time, Kris enjoys hiking, running, race walking, grilling, and beer brewing. He currently resides in Orange, VT with his wife and their three children.

Mike O’Hara, Claims Specialist

Mike O’Hara works in the claims department at Hickok & Boardman specializing in commercial claims. He has almost 20 years of collective insurance experience as a multi lines adjuster, field appraiser and agency liaison. He is currently a Vermont licensed producer, adjuster and motor vehicle appraiser.

Mike resides in Barre with his wife Karen and their daughter. His interests include running and following sports, particularly the Baltimore Orioles baseball team.

Stowe Staff

Rich Smith, Vice President

Rich joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 1986, as a producer and manager. Previously, he was employed as a large account underwriter for AIG. Rich is a 1981 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, receiving a B.A. in Economics and Business Administration.

Previously, Rich has served on the board for both the Stowe Tennis Club and the Stowe Performing Arts, as Treasurer for the Vermont Lodging and Restaurant Association, as a board member with Franklin Lamoille Bank, as Trustee for the Stowe Education Fund, as Secretary for the Stowe Rotary Club, as Director for Copley Hospital Foundation, as Director for the Lamoille County United Way, and as a trustee for the Stowe Area Association.

Jon Butler, Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Jon Butler joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in July of 2014 as a Business Account Manager. In 2017 he began his transition into the role of Client Advisor in Business Insurance. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, Jon worked in customer service in the recreation and hospitality industry. Jon graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. He resides in Stowe and enjoys everything Vermont has to offer including community events, mountain biking, and skiing.

Tim O’Neill, Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Tim O’Neill joined Denis, Ricker & Brown, a member of the Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group, in July 2011, as a Commercial Sales Executive. Tim graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a B.A. in Communications and has more than twenty years of sales experience.

Tim currently serves as President of The Lyndonville Rotary Club (2014-15). He currently resides in Waterford with his wife, Mary Jo, and their sons, Jack and Luke. In his free time Tim enjoys an active lifestyle that includes skiing, golfing, and hiking.

Corey Parent joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in 2015, as a Business Client Advisor in our St. Albans office focusing on business development in Franklin County.

A BFA and St. Lawrence University graduate, Parent previously worked in Municipal Bond Sales with Goldman Sachs and most recently as a Business Data Analyst with UVM Medical Center. He also serves in the Vermont House of Representatives. Parent resides in St. Albans and is an active youth football and hockey coach.

Plattsburgh Staff

Ryan Lee, Client Adviser, Business Insurance

Ryan joined Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group in March, 2018 as a Client Advisor. Ryan graduated with a B.S. from St. Lawrence University and a MBA from Norwich University. Prior to joining Hickok & Boardman Insurance Group Ryan led the Vermont start-up and satellite operation for ETS Staffing & Recruiting and served as the Sr. District Executive for the Boy Scouts in northern New York. He resides in Plattsburgh, NY with his wife Lauren and their two dogs. Ryan enjoys a mix of seasonal hobbies including golf, ice hockey, skiing, hiking, wood working and being outdoors. He also plays a variety of instruments.
